Cwmorthin Quarry

nr Tanygrisiau, North Wales

In the late 19th century there were six slate quarries in the Cwmorthin Valley
with 300 people living and working there. The quarries are all now silent,
disused and derelict. The wonderful setting makes this an interesting area
to explore. The lakeside location is tranquil and beautiful (apart from the
occasional irritation of the off road motorbikers who interrupt the peace).

Walk along the old tramway which connected the quarries with the
Ffestiniog Railway at Tanygrisiau. Look out for Robin Jones' slate garden and
Cwmorthin Terrace (the living accommodation for the Cwmorthin quarry workers).
Further along the tramway you will find Capel Rhosydd (the Gorlan Chapel)
- mortally wounded in recent years when the roof timbers collapsed.
It is a real pity that the chapel can't be protected and the structure restored.
In a few years time it will be just a pile of stone.

Past the chapel you will see a clump of trees which shield Plas Cwmorthin
- the quarry manager's house - now a ruin. Other buildings include Rhosydd
Terrace - family accommodation for the Rhosydd quarry workers. Here is
the start of a steep climb to Rhosydd well worth the walk in good weather.
Enjoy the fabulous views of Cwmorthin on the way up. Once in Rhosydd quarry
be careful when climbing inclines and stay out of the underground chambers.
